(Each day we practice sequencing, looking at the Date, Days of the week, Months of the year, and counting down how many days we have been in school.  We are also practicing place value; every day in school we add a straw to our box, each time we pass another ten days in school we bundle our counting straws in groups of 10.)

Counting and identifying numbers up through 20 cont.

Simple addition cont. - number charts, mental math, fingers, counters cont.

Simple subtraction cont.-number charts, using fingers/picture strategies

Simple word problems cont.-“I have 10 carrots to feed my rabbit. I give him one carrot for each day of the week. How many carrots do I have left?”

      Math Center games continued

(The children explored some of the mathematical concepts we have be learning about through math centers using puzzles, pattern blocks, addition cards, &magnetic numbers.)

·         Understanding “How many more?”

Jan has 6 bananas, Paul has 3.  How many more bananas does Jan have than Paul?

·         Subtraction-mental math- simple equationsà 2-1=

Additional info

Hello Tiger Parents,

Hope you had a great week. The field trip to the Eric Carle exhibit went very well. The kids really enjoyed the additional art craft as well. Don’t forget, next Monday is our trip to Shaker Art school. This is a free trip and a big thanks to Claire’s mom for sharing this with us! Please have your child wear their uniform on Monday if possible.

I have recently started to send home readers. Your kiddos are ready to read or already reading! I personally, am very excited to see them working so hard, and I know you all are as well. I will send books home on Tuesday and Friday. If I send the same book home a couple days in a row, it is because I feel that we need just a bit more practice. Here are some pointers for reading at home:

-ask your child about what’s going on in the pictures

-ask them to make predictions- “what do you think will happen next?”

-ask them ‘why’—“why do you think x happened? Why do you think x is sad/happy?”etc.

-feel free to ‘echo read’—you read, then your child reads after you

-encourage reading with expression!!!

Next Friday is the schools scheduled day for parent/teacher conferences. However, I know many of you are busy, so if you would like to schedule a conference for another time next week before or after school, or even the following week, that is perfectly fine as well. As of now, I have completed five conferences, and scheduled 3 more for next week. The following times are available:

Monday, 19th- 8:45 am- free; 3:00- free; 3:15- free

Wednesday, 21st- 8:45 am- free; 3:00- free; 3:15- free

Thursday, 22nd- 8:45 am- free; 3:00- Emily; 3:15- Sabine

Friday, 23rd- 8:45 am- Teppei; increments of 20 minutes here after, are all open

I look forward to setting up a time, and discussing your child’s successes with you. That is all I have for now. If you ever have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to email me or talk with me in person. Thanks so much for reading and have a great weekend!
